비엔나는 그 이름만으로도 클래식 음악의 성지임을 떠올리게 한다. 나는 12박 13일의 북유럽여행의 마지막 여정으로, 오스트리아에서 비엔나 레지던스 오케스트라의 음악회를 선택하였다. 비엔나의 역사적인 궁전에서 모차르트의 피가로의 결혼, 터키 행진곡, 요한 슈트라우스의 도나우왈츠, 비발디의 사계 브람스의 헝가리댄스등 다수의 명곡을 감상할 수 있는 이 콘서트는 여행의 하이라이트 중 하나로, 단순한 음악회를 넘어 예술과 역사의 경계를 넘나드는 특별한 경험이었다.
팸플릿 프로그램을 보니 비엔나 레지던스 오케스트라는 1990년 피아니스트이자 지휘자인 폴 모저와 그의 아내 실비아 모저에 의해 설립되었다. 그들은 전 세계를 순회하며 비엔나 클래식 음악의 진수를 전하고 있다. 오늘날 이 오케스트라는 비엔나 중심부의 여러 역사적인 장소에서 정기적으로 공연을 펼치며, 청중들에게 비엔나 클래식의 정수를 선사하고 있다는 것을 알게 되었다.
콘서트는 고풍스러운 궁전의 웅장함과 어우러져 더욱 특별했다. 바이올린, 첼로, 더블베이스, 피아노, 플루트, 그리고 두 명의 발레댄서와 성악가의 어우러진 앙상블은 그야말로 감동적이었다. 모차르트, 비발디, 베토벤, 슈트라우스 등의 명곡들이 연주되는 동안, 나는 마치 시간 여행을 하는 듯한 기분을 느꼈다. 긴 여행의 여독이 모두 풀리는 것 같다.

이 음악회는 관광객을 위한 패키지여서 여행복장도 여행 복장도 가능했다. 티켙이 일인당 90유로 팸플릿 5유로 가격이 다소 비싸기는 하였지만, 인터미션 시간에 나온 스파클링 와인 한 잔과 함께 마치 왕궁의 무도회에 초대받은 느낌으로. 오스트리아의 클래식 음악을 직접 경험하며, 그 역사와 전통을 몸소 느낄 수 있었던 것이 그 이상의 가치가 있었던 소중한 시간이었다. 비엔나에서의 음악회는 그야말로 힐링 그 자체였다. 그동안 바쁜 일상에서 벗어나, 여행을 떠나 비엔나에서 고전 음악의 세계에 잠시 몸을 맡기며 진정한 여유와 평화를 찾을 수 있었다.
음악회를 마치고 돌아오는 길, 나는 오스트리아의 아름다운 궁전과 클래식 음악의 선율을 마음에 담으며, 무용과 음악이 주는 예술의 힘에 대해 다시금 생각하게 되었다. 비엔나 레지던스 오케스트라의 공연은 단순한 음악회가 아니라, 그 자체로 하나의 예술 작품이었다. 이 경험을 통해 발레와 음악, 그리고 그 둘의 완벽한 조화를 더욱 깊이 이해하게 되었다.

An Evening of Classical Music Encounter in Vienna
Review of the Vienna Residence Orchestra
Vienna evokes the essence of classical music with just its name. As the final leg of my 12-night, 13-day Northern European journey, I chose to attend a concert by the Vienna Residence Orchestra in Austria. Held in one of Vienna’s historic palaces, this concert offered a repertoire featuring masterpieces such as Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, the Turkish March, Johann Strauss’s Blue Danube Waltz, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, and Brahms’s Hungarian Dances. It transcended a mere musical performance, becoming a special experience that crossed the boundaries of art and history.
Perusing the pamphlet program, I learned that the Vienna Residence Orchestra was founded in 1990 by pianist and conductor Paul Moser and his wife Silvia Moser. They travel the world, sharing the essence of Viennese classical music. Today, the orchestra regularly performs at several historic venues in the heart of Vienna, offering audiences the quintessence of Viennese classics.
The concert was made even more special by the grandeur of the opulent palace. The ensemble, consisting of violinists, cellists, double bassists, pianists, flutists, and two ballet dancers and vocalists, was truly captivating. As masterpieces by Mozart, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Strauss, and others filled the air, I felt as though I were embarking on a journey through time, with all the weariness of travel melting away.
The performance by the Vienna Residence Orchestra was not just about enjoying music; it was a marvel at the perfect harmony created by the artists on stage and their unique expressions. Especially, the dancers’ performances, despite the small stage, perfectly complemented the music, evoking a profound sense of unity between movement and music. Hearing classical music, which I had often used in ballet classes, in the heartland of music, the Austrian palace, was truly special.
As the concert was part of a tourist package, attire varied from casual to formal. While the ticket price of 90 euros per person and 5 euros for the pamphlet seemed somewhat steep, it felt like being invited to a royal ball during the intermission, with a glass of sparkling wine. Experiencing Austrian classical music firsthand and feeling its history and tradition was a priceless experience. The concert in Vienna was truly healing in itself. It allowed me to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, immerse myself in the world of classical music, and find true relaxation and peace.
On the way back from the concert, I carried the melodies of Austria’s beautiful palaces and classical music in my heart, once again contemplating the power of dance and music in art. The performance by the Vienna Residence Orchestra was not just a mere concert; it was a work of art in itself. Through this experience, I gained a deeper understanding of the perfect harmony between ballet and music.
The inspiration gained from this trip will serve as a strong foundation for my future creative endeavors and education.
